What retrofitting actually means

Grinding machine retrofitting means keeping the mechanical body of the machine — the bed, spindle and slideways — and replacing everything electrical and control related around it. We strip out obsolete relay logic and unsupported drives, then rebuild the machine on modern Delta PLC, HMI, VFD and servo control so it runs accurately again with spares that are still available.

Most grinding machines on Indian shop floors are mechanically sound and electrically obsolete. The bed, spindle and slideways were built to last forty years. The relay panel, the drive and the operator controls were not. That gap is the whole of our business.

What a retrofit gives you back

  • The cycle. Auto infeed, spark-out and dwell working again as a repeatable sequence rather than something the operator times by hand.
  • The size. Component size held shift after shift, not drifting through the day.
  • The spares. Every electrical part on the machine available from a Delta distributor in Gujarat instead of from a supplier who stopped trading.
  • The documentation. Schematics, I/O list and PLC source that your own maintenance team can work from.

What we do not touch

A retrofit is not a mechanical rebuild. We do not regrind slideways, rescrape beds or rebuild spindles. If the mechanics are worn past the accuracy you need, new control will not recover it — and we will tell you so at survey stage, even though saying it costs us the order. See how we work for why that matters to us.

Machines we retrofit

We take on the four main grinder families, plus imported or orphan machines where the original supplier no longer offers support — in those cases we reverse-engineer the grinding cycle from the machine itself. Each machine type has its own page:

How a retrofit runs

Six steps, in this order, every time. The sequence matters — most retrofits go wrong because parts were bought before anyone agreed what the machine should actually do.

STEP 01

Machine survey

We come to your plant, run the machine as it is, check the mechanical condition and note the grinding cycle you need back.

STEP 02

Scope & quotation

A written scope, a control philosophy and a transparent Delta BOM. You know what you are buying before you commit.

STEP 03

Design & drawings

Electrical schematics, panel layout, I/O list and console design. Everything documented before we build.

STEP 04

Panel build & wiring

Panel manufactured and wired in our Wadhwan shop to the schedule, with ferrule numbers matching the drawing.

STEP 05

Programming & testing

PLC, HMI, VFD and servo programmed and dry-tested on the bench before the panel goes anywhere near your machine.

STEP 06

Install & prove the size

Installation, commissioning, trial grinding on your own components, operator training, and the full document set including source code.

Questions about this

Common questions.

What is grinding machine retrofitting?

Grinding machine retrofitting means keeping the mechanical body of the machine — the bed, spindle and slideways — and replacing everything electrical and control related around it. Axis Mechatronics strips out obsolete relay logic and unsupported drives, then rebuilds the machine on modern Delta PLC, HMI, VFD and servo control so it runs accurately again with spares that are still available.

How much does a grinding machine retrofit cost in India?

Cost depends on the machine size, the number of axes to be automated and the condition of the mechanics, so we quote only after a machine survey. As a guide, a control retrofit is usually a fraction of the price of replacing the machine with a new one. Send photos of the machine and its nameplate on WhatsApp for an initial assessment.

How long does a grinding machine retrofit take?

Most grinding machine retrofits are completed in a few weeks from approval, covering design, panel building, programming, installation and commissioning. The exact schedule is confirmed after the machine survey and depends on component lead times.

Is retrofitting cheaper than buying a new grinding machine?

In almost every case where the mechanics are still sound, yes — a control retrofit costs a fraction of a new machine of equivalent size. The exception is a machine whose bed, spindle or slideways are worn beyond the accuracy you need. We check that at survey stage and tell you honestly when a retrofit is not worth doing.

Two or three photos — the machine, the nameplate and the existing panel — are enough for an initial assessment. Anil answers directly.
